Emanuel Christopher Welch, the president of the township school board, and his brother sued me for defamation based on posts to my blog, Proviso Probe. I am the first blogger sued by an elected official for defamation.
Today, an attorney from a big firm told me on the phone the firm would take the case pro bono. There are still some formalities, but he told me our most recent discussion had attorney-client protection--not that I have anything to hide.
The attorney said the firm would not charge me for the hours, but would expect me to pay the filing costs. I don't expect this to be a ton of money, but it could be hundreds of dollars, maybe even a couple thousand.
